Anyone riding in the snow? I am uploading a picture of my mountain bike, outfitted for the snow with 2.5" tires and Climbmitts (those things on the handle bars) which allow me to ride with a thin glove so I can control shifting and braking better. This rig works best on packed snow or fresh snow less than 4" deep. I don't have studded tires (yet), but so far I haven't needed them.

I got caught out in the snow a couple of times this winter. Fortunately I arrived home before it started to stick. My road bike has 28 mm tires with very little tread. I've never seen those Climbmitts around here (Seattle). Looks like your hands would stay plenty warm.
This is really cool. We are always so sad when we have to put our bikes away for the winter. What kind of trails to you ride on? We'd love to try this but I'm not sure where else to ride but snowmobile trails and that seems a little risky. It's also hard to find the time since we're usually skiing in the winter. How much did you invest in "winterizing" your bike?
I love riding in the woods in snow. I just use my beater bike and dress as if I am x-country skiing. When it is too cold in New Hampshire to ride on the road because of the wind chill, I take out the old bike and head into the quiet of snow covered wooded hills for a good workout.
Everyday now. Winter has fully lodged itself here in Minneapolis. Studded tires, clothing layers, goggles, cold temps, plenty of ice and snow. My mindset has shifted, and cycling is now one of the winter sports. I liken my commute everyday to a person who lives in a ski town and hits the slopes for a few runs before and after work. Somehow that makes it seem more fun.
Saturday Dec 13.. no one out here except me, Buddy Ty (pictured) and a dude riding a Surly w/ 3 inch fat boys...oh and the four snow machines that crept by us.. I didn't yield,, they can go around ...
As of today. the Des Plaines is not ready to ride. The snow is too deep. We need a hard pack snow/ice to ride on. I went out this afternoon and spent more time falling down then riding. not fun.

This winter I've been riding a mountain bike but still don't feel comfortable with my handling skills in snow/ice. Could be the knobby tires... I'm not sure.
As for those mitts, I recently tried out a pair on my ride and found that they weren't effective for me. (Then again, I suffer from extremely cold fingers and toes in even mild temps, so... ) They are great in theory, though.
Always enjoy discussions with fellow winter cyclists. Thanks for the posts.
