Great piece Brian. I have had regular conversations with athletes and fit folk about robbing themselves of life experiences by becoming completely militant about their training. Ninety percent of them are not contending finishers but emulate the tra…

Is it ok to sleep with your bike? Yes, as long as you shower first and always use protection. Make sure the bike is on the bottom.

Hometown:

Relationship Status:
It's Complicated
About Me:
Accomplished 50 year old multi-sport athlete, non-conformist, opinionated, loves good beer, good books, writing, being outdoors, annoying others, working out, and of course, riding my bike.
Favorite Music:
I'm a rock and roll dinosaur. I love good bands from the 60's, 70's and 80's, not much good music has come out after that, with a few exceptions, like John Hyatt, THe Gin BLossoms, The Jayhawks, stuff that has a real melody. Jazz and classical music also grace my cd player or turntable (yes i still use a turntable!), but in any kind of music, as with most so-called art, 75% of what is out there is pure garbage.
Favorite TV Shows:
There are no good tv shows, but there are good movies. Frank Zappa said it best!

I am gross and perverted
Im obsessed n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you cant look away
I make you think Im delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin out
From your tv set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we dont need you
Dont go for help...no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

Thats right, folks..
Dont touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozing along on your living room floor

I am the slime from your video
Cant stop the slime, people, lookit me go
Favorite Bike:
I own 5 bikes, but my fave is always one i dont have

Are we obsessed idiots?

Balanced Cycling

Most of us dedicated athletes spend a great deal of time pursuing our hobby. How do we know if we’re overdoing it; if we’ve struck a balance in our life between training and racing and other important pursuits? While there are as many reasons to ride, race, and train as there are people who do them, let me suggest some criteria that all of us can use to examine how healthy our approach to our sport is:

The quality of the experience is more important than the quality of the pe… Continue

Door County Journal or Man Does not Live By CYcling Alone

I was in Door County, Wisconsin Thursday-Sunday, August 27-30, 2009, with my Float Your Boat Kayak Meet-up Club, where we camped in Peninsula State park, one of my absolute favorite places. This is a much more fun group than my bike team or bike buddies, who usually are too worn out after long rides to truly relish the outdoors and all of its activities, and most would never dream of camping. Even better, it has lots of women members, some of whom can really paddle well, and not just their boats… Continue

Bike Commuter Blues

BIKE COMMUTER BLUES

A while back i was commuting to work and the following conversation took place between a driver and me.

"Hey asshole, why don't you get on the sidewalk?"

"DO i look like i'm walking," i replied. I'm doing 20-25 mph, not exactly a safe speed for a sidewalk."

"I hope you get hit by a car", he said.

"I hope you get hit by a Hummer and gas goes up to $10 a gallon," i replied and turned off the road.

I’ve been commuting to work by bike or other self-propelled means for 25 s… Continue

Contador vs. Armstrong's Raging Ego/Tour Notes

Out of retirement and riding at a high level, but in this case, Lance Armstrong is full of shit, accusing Contador of not riding a team race. It was he who did not ride a team race, whereas Contador did. Contador could have attacked anytime in the mountains and probably ridden to more stage wins, but was held back by his team. DId Armstrong ever hold back on the last climb of the day in the mountains during his 7 wins? No way, except to give Pantani a gift stage. On Mt. Ventoux, Contador was cle… Continue

Dopers on Bikes/Tour de France

THe Tour Sucks

Le Tour de France is only a few days away. It starts on July 4th, how's that for Irony? Its like China having Boxing day on September 11th. Our nation's b-day and le Tour has the nerve to start their biggest annual event? But in reality, Le Tour is nothing but a blight on the pimply shoulders of professional cycling. If one of these shaved legged science projects kissed a baby for the cameras at the prologue, by stage three the kid would be signed by the Oakland Raiders. Some say… Continue

Brian, you're entitled to your own opinion, as I am to mine. My apologies that my assessment came across as too scornful of you, for contempt is something that this world needs a lot less of. I see that you don’t consider yourself a Lance basher, well good. I am a fan of Armstrong overall, but I don’t defend his every attitude and action. Like I said, your post just seemed too one-sided to me. Both Lance and Contador handled their in-team rivalry rather poorly, as I see it.
Let me propose a truce. If you forgive my “humorless trolling”, I’ll forgive your less than favorable post on Lance.

Brian,

I simply don't understand your fascination with beer. It doesn't taste very good; is very filling to the point of bloating and causes uncontrollable belching. After consuming enough, if it doesn't make you sick to your stomach to the point of puking (which it often did to me) it leaves you with a remarkable headache or hangover the next morning. Just the opposite of what I would want prior to my next bike ride.

However, to each his own. Enjoy. I used to engage in other inebriative activities too, but I no longer need to. The simple endorphin high (quite similar to morphine) is more than enough pour moi.
