cyclingboo The Alaska Bike for Women

On Sunday I got out of bed and had an argument with myself, to participate in the annual Alaska Bike for Women or stay in bed. The weather was mostly cloudy but the temperature was in the high 40's (for Alaskans that is not very cold!). To participate won the argument so I crawled out of bed, dressed and loaded up the bike in the old truck I am driving right now and headed to Chugiak (chew-gi-ack) High School north of Anchorage. The course is not long, just 9 miles but it is difficult. The firs… Continue

cyclingboo Springtime in Anchorage, Alaska

I was able to ride to work on Tuesday, it was the first time this year. I had a good ride, it wasn't too cold; it wasn't snowing, and there wasn't any ice on the sidewalk. My route to and from work is on a sidewalk paralleling one the busiest roads in Anchorage, Tudor Road. The traffic was light, the dust was minimial and dawn was breaking so it wasn't totally dark. On Friday we broke a record for total snowfall, 22 inches in my backyard. Then it snowed some more on Saturday. Wednesday and Th…

Dan Katz 1st Ride with Albertos

Went out today on a maiden voyage with the Alberto's crowd. Wendy G lead out and their were a number of riders with varying skill levels. My wife (Amelia) and friend Holly (see my friends) went out for their first taste of an official club ride. Suffice it to say everyone had a good time. Group rode 35 miles or so with an average speed of 18.5. Everyone hung on and did a great job. This was officially the ladies introduction to an official club ride.

The ride was a bit different fo…

Terry March 28th, 2008

Wow. Haven't posted here in a month!

Mileage to date is approx. 250...not much for those of you in warmer climates but not too bad for North Dakota. I've been doing a lot of small rides (store..errands..etc) with gas prices being what they are. Plus, it makes me feel good NOT putting $50.00 in the tank quite as often. Continue

Tuckerboy First Couple Of Weeks of "Training"

Well I am now enetering what should be my 3rd week of training as I outlined in an earlier post. Training for the year didn't start off too well since I had to work 6 days and somelong hours at work that week. Then I got sick to boot!

last week was better, even though I didn't quite make my mileage goal. I started out on Tuesday with a test ride of my commute to work. It ended up being a bit longer than I had estimated through Bikely but it was a good ride until I kind of bonke…

Vitaly In case you are wandering what happened to me.

Prefatory. So at about mile 10 I realized that I have too much liquids in my body that I somehow needed to get rid off, and since it was about 30 degrees out, sweating it out was not an option. So, having decided that I would have to take the more conventional approach the only question remained as to where. Pat advised me that we'd be going straight for a while and to make a sprint toward Old School Forest Preserve.

Post Separation. Well, somewhere between Rt. 60 and Old School I spot… Continue

Terry February 26th 2008

Welcome to my page fellow Veloists!

February 26th and the temperature is currently 19 degrees with a windchill of 9, so it looks like no big rides for me today...outside anyway. The roads a quite clear though, so it is possible to ride if you REALLY want to.

Can hardly wait for the upcoming weekend. Temps are predicted to be in the mid 40's. That's warm enough so my bikes shifters will work properly. Yaaa!

Mike the Veloist Recent Enlightenment.

After six months of careful study I have figured out why my wife, who claims to be smarter than me, really is. I have been religiously studying all of the women’s magazines that come into my house and comparing them with my usual reading material and have concluded that women really do know more things than most men. Well me anyway. While my knowledge is deep it is not vast. It extends to understanding the proper layering system to stay warm on cold rides. Who Cipo is and where he gets his dent… Continue

CJ Summary

Yeah, I got lazy and stopped posting. To sum up last year. Raced a lot. Learned a lot. Had a blast. Crashed at Evanston (not my fault, fine). Crashed at Grayslake (mehanical, probably my fault, broke shoulder). I'm fat and out of shape right now. I will complete my degree in the middle of March. I hope to start training seriously than. I plan top find some form by June. It should be a great summer. I'm really looking forward the the Colavita rides. Continue

Tuckerboy Training For A Century

Per my previous post, one of my main goals this year is to ride my first century. I think I've done enough reading to have a good understanding of how I should train for this. I was using this Ride The Rockies training plan, but it's a 15 week plan, which doesn't get me where I want to be by June first. So I did some surfing around and found this plan that looks go…

Tuckerboy Cycling Goals for 2008

This is the first year I have ever made any "cycling goals", since I just started to really get into this biking thing in 2007. I didn't realize that a lot of bike folks set yearly mileage goals until the past couple of week, when people were posting theirs over on Bike Forums. I have no idea of what I'm capable of as far as yearly mileage, so I'm just going to post the list of goals that I'm had in my head for the past month of so.

First, I n

Kaiser W Cycling - makes you fat?

OK, cycling itself doesn't make anyone fat. If more people cycled in the USA, my country would be a leaner, healthier, and happier place. But I'm working on an article about my experience this summer. Where I got faster and dropped 3.5 lbs of weight (losing 5.5 lbs of muscle and gaining 2 lbs of fat). By riding a lot. And not lifting like I normally do. Type II fiber dominant types need beware. More to come.... Continue

Frank Shapiro The Morning Ride

OK. First, now I understand how these blog posts work. That explains why my last one was so goofy. This morning was a perfect brisk morning for a ride. Knickers, Woolie Boolie socks, toe covers long sleeve jersey, full finger gloves and ear covers instead of the usual shorts and jersey. Also had my head light on as it is still dark at 5:30 and let's see, daylight savings time ends ... in November?! Wasn't there a time when DST ended and we got a few more weeks of light at 0530? Mike the Veloist Great News for Illinois Cyclists

ILLINOIS GOV SIGNS 3-FOOT PASSING BILL INTO LAW Motorists in Illinois must pass bicyclists with at least three feet of room thanks to Gov. Blagojevich's signature on Senate Bill 80 yesterday. This measure was supported by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation http://www.biketraffic.org/ and led by our partner organization, the League of Illinois Bicyclists. It's a significant victory for bicycling statewide. The law, effective immediately, amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to also provide that bi… Continue

Gerry Miller If more people rode bikes instead of drove cars.

We wouldn't be in Iraq. People wouldn't be dying for our "strategic interests" (read: future oil supplies). And, perhaps, the oil companies would turn themselves into "energy" companies and with government encouragement accelerate the search for new technologies and new sources of energy to replace carbon-based energy to drive the future economy. Just a thought. Gerry Continue

Rodman Broken in Portland, Oregon

I was riding home from work @ Macadam Zupan's to West Linn on Thursday. It was still light out but was getting close to dusk. So I pulled over to put on my helmet light. I just wanted to make sure that someone could see me a little bit better. About five miles from home at the intersection of McVey and highway 43 I was struck by a car.
I was going about 25 miles an hour with the flow of traffic. The car that struck me was supposed to yield to on coming traffic since she was turning left. I s… Continue

Hilary Baumann Bikes bikes bikes....

Ok so I joined a bike group ... but I don't own a bike ... YET. I've been debating what kind of bike I really want and can't seem to make up my mind.

I may end up just buying something cheap for the moment to ride around the neighborhood ... run small errands with etc. Eventually I may want something more like a mountain bike to go camping with and such... but I'm just not sure!

Eric Martin What is with these guys?

I'm tired of the negative publicity the Tour de France is bringing to our beautiful sport. Cycling gets three solid weeks of coverage a year, and this is how these guys decide to publize the sport. Is there that much pressure to perform from sposors that busting your ass day in and day out is not enough? Should someone be looking at the sponsors to relent a bit? Or should teams just go more private? I just wish people would start focusing on the rides that these guys are having. Whether or no…

MattZing Bike Oddities

All,

It seems recently, my bike has been feeling different. If I may add some background, it's been quite a few years since I've worked hard on a bike. In fact, this is the first time I've had a go at a 'proper' fitness regime.

The steering seems much looser, almost like the front wheel has a mind of it's own. It will veer left/right at a whim, admittedly adding a slightly fun bit of risk. I've checked the handlebars are securely 'set', and all is well there.

Could it… Continue

Eric Martin Boulder Peak Triathlon

Figured a good place to start would be my triathlon yesterday, no? And since it's a cycling site, I'll focus on the bike ride!

The ride portion was a 42km loop all over Boulder. The gem of the ride was Olde Stage, or Lee Hill Road. This is a 15% grade over 2/3 of a mile, and is just brutal. It's not an incredibly tough hill to just jump out of the saddle on and stomp, but when you have a 10K looming, you want to conserve. I just sat in the saddle and spun like hell. The hill is very To…

craig Mount Macedon

Well today week long anticipation of the mountain ride was over. Alarm goes off at 6:15am quick call to Ross to confirm weather in the area and it’s a go. Get the stuff sorted out, put the TCR in the back of the car and off I go, setting the GPS to the start point Ross’s house. Get there a bit late but nothing to worry about. The morning’s milkshake all digested and feeling pretty good. Didn’t realise that we would have to drive to Mount Macedon so I quickly suggested that we just ride, extra 6… Continue

Thomas Wyld Critical Mass and Broken Rims

Finally got around to joining in with a monthly Mass. Think I rather liked it. Good vibe all the way, (almost), and nice to have the freedom to potter willy nilly about the place.

Must admit that I wasn't the first to be yelling at the top of my lungs "More Bikes, Less Cars! More Bikes, Less Cars! More Bikes, Less Cars!..." and perhaps I felt a little guilty for not joining in wholeheartedly. Do I think it is a nobel sentiment? Yes, but having ridden in London for most of my life I thi…

I did a couple great road rides in the last 2 weeks that I thought I'd share. Both are spot on 60 miles and first is 6200 feet of climbing, and the second is 5300 feet of climbing. I have .gpx files I can share if interested (not sure how to attach them, perhaps I'd add to my… Continue

As some of you know, on August 14, 2006 I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. On that day, I became not a cancer victim, but a cancer survivor. I get to live my life today as the result of a lot of people.

Kaiser W Cicadas - Natures Little Rockets

Ahh, summer in Chicago this season is blessed wth the visitation (or is that infestation?) of nature's oldest living insects, the 17-year cicada. These red-eyed beauties emerge from the ground every 17 years, especially around Chicagoland, make a whole lotta noise, mate, and die in a period of 6 weeks. But what a glorious 6 weeks it is for bikers! Since one male cicada can 'sing' at a sound level of 93 decibels (about the level of a power mower), the 1 million or so that populate a wooded acre m… Continue

Kaiser W Gettin' older and smarter? Or just older?

Back when we were in high school, we'd grab some cash and hop on our old steel frame bikes that probably weighed over 30 lbs and go out and ride 100+ miles (measured by a manual, clickie-thing odometer strapped onto the front fork and reconfirmed with maps and rulers). Ride nutrition consisted of buying a burger and fries and a glass bottle of Gatorade when we stopped. Then, we'd come home and play basketball or baseball and not think twice about it. Now, we have to carefully plan miles and re… Continue

Mike the Veloist Missed cue.

About two hours into the 90-minute ride I planned I realized I had missed a turn. Now, I always work from cue sheets and carry a map of the area when I go out on a new ride but that didn’t seem to help me here. You see I never put the distances on the cue sheets. I just look for the street signs. It works most of the time. The problem was my turn was marked Main Street on the west side of the road and not marked on the east as I rode north. I was looking for an east road. When I looked back lat… Continue

Thomas Wyld Frequently Lacking...

Here I am at 1 am on a Tuesday entering Blog 1. This would have been done earlier as I am rather more excited about this particular form of web based time wasting than I am sure is healthy. There are things to be said about CTC's recent victory over the UK's Highway Code amendments that are more than appropriate to form the basis of a paragraph or two, and given a few weeks I will try and get a decent little report in. Have also been itching to run through my now much distant New Zealand cycl…

Gerry Miller On Yer Bike.

I am a beginner. I ran for 30 years. I tried to run almost every day. If you try to run every day you may get 5 days a week. That keeps you in shape. I used to miss the endorphin wrap when I couldn't run. Getting hooked on endorphins is, beyond sex and a profound martini, one of the smartest things a body can do. Cycling is more hassle than running because your need clothes, helmet, etc. And while no one (in their right minds) is going to steal your running shoes if you stop for nature, you hav… Continue

She can’t imagine why I’d ever want to shave. She of course has to but I have a choice, so she thinks. Fitting in is human nature we all want to belong. I just happen to ride bikes with a bunch of men that shave their legs. So by all the standards of being human I need to shave mine. It’s that simple. It… Continue

It was at the age of 9 that I discovered velocity on a Schwinn 10-speed. I have never recovered from this addiction. Sadly, given my propensity for accidents (and my fondness for my skull), I have spent the last 8 years in an exclusive relationship with a hybrid, the logic being that the maximum velocity achieved on a hybrid is not within the limits of the "death zone". On April 12, however, I succumbed to the lure of the Trek 5200. On April 22, I had my first accident in 8 years. My name is Ang… Continue

Mike the Veloist Christmas Bikes

Friday, December 29 my last ride of 2006. I jumped on the North Shore Bike Path and headed north from Waukegan, IL following the limestone path to Kenosha, WI and into Racine County. It was a 50-mile round trip, sloppy, solo ride to end the year. A ride I’ve never done and now I can’t wait to do it again. Next time I’ll take it all the way up to Milwaukee. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about. As I pulled off my wet clothes in the parking lot, I looked up and saw them. Two ten-year old… Continue
