Being a former Bostonian, and someone that resides "a stones throw" from the city limits, it's nice to see Boston finally turning the corner to become a more bike friendly city. After commuting in and around the city, I can attest to some of the inherent difficulties of commuting in a city in which a portion of it's road systems were designed almost 400 years ago. However, I'm not sure how much of this excuse was legit. This doesn't seem to be an issue in Europe's cities, most of which are older than Boston. But I guess due to gas prices Europe has assimilated to bike culture with a little less pain than the US. Check out this article from the NY Times. Hopefully most cities will head in this direction.

Of course, we are of the "car culture" and most of our difficulties with "bike commuting" are probably rooted in this mindset. Whenever I think of the idea of "bike friendly" I think of this story from Bicycling Magazine
