2008 mileage goals

I had a goal to ride 4,000 miles in 2007. I didn't make it because I had to stay off the saddle for a while for prostate cancer testing and surgery. (The big secret is that I don't think I would have made it anyway.)
So here it's 2008 and I'm champing at the bit for 4,000 miles this year. Does anyone else have any goals?

Hi Gene, I have goals but I never tell anyone that way I never fall short. It's the Homer Simpson approach to life, set the bar low and you'll always make it. As far as mileage goes every year I think I'm going to hit 5,000 and every year I come up with 3,500 to 4,000. Maybe I should just lower my sights. Welcome to The Veloist and good luck with your miles this year.

As I posted on my Blog, I have no idea of what I'm capable of in terms of yearly mileage, since I'm a bit of a newbie, but I have some other goals, mainly my first century and a Colorado mountain pass or two.

One question: do you include trainer miles in your 4,000 mile goal?

Nothing wrong with a trainer, but I just can't do it anymore. Minutes seem like hours, even in front of the TV. But if I did use a trainer, you can bet that I would count it. Yessir. I wrote about my goals at BikingBis recently, and several readers chimed in with their goals -- including vertical -- and how to track them.
Good luck!

I don't include my indoor trainer miles. I don't know if others do. If I did I wouldn't have that much more because I'm not as good about indoor, off season riding. Ask around but I think it's like saying you have sex five times a week in a survey but only once with another person. It's not the same thing.

Ride more but also ride faster. I'd like to see the average mph creep well into the double digits. I am currently negotiating with my thighs. I'd also like to complete a long ride and still have circulation in all extremities, if you get my meaning.

PS: I thought sex with anything or anyone was a recordable event.

No goals yet, other than to lose some lbs! Yeah on the trainer is horrible without a group to train with. And minutes do wseem like hours...even with a tv!

Hi Gene, that is a hefty goal you have for this year I hope you are in good shape after your medical ordeal but with a little bit of perseverance you can reach your goal no sweat! just don't let the next episode of American Idol be an obstacle. GO Gene!!!!!

My goal is to just enjoy riding a bike a much as possible. You never know when your ability to ride can be taken from you. I am going to enjoy the outdoors, good friends, and good post ride beers. I am going to try not to take my riding as serious and respect the joy of riding.

Hi Gene,

Your goal is very realistic. Looks like you and I are about the same age. I'm slated for the prostate biopsy later next month as well. Just recovered from a broken left hip (surgery & all). Started riding again in late January. My goals are 1) to recovery fully from the hip break/surgery; 2) slowly increase my average ride distance to pre-injury level; 3) to slowly increase my average speed to pre-injury average. I expect to achieve these goals by mid-July and I'm on target.

Stay focused - I wish you well.

Gents:

My goal is to overcome being 63 and a little creaky from the long, cold winter, and to ride like I'm 40 (well, 42 will do). There's a 7 day ride across Iowa looming in my diary for late July. It would be nice to do that in comfort. I have been spinning to increase the fast twitch muscles and any other bits of my body which might be listening.

Good luck.

Gerry
