Pedal problems

With the high price of gas, I've decided as a form of protest that I would start commuting by bike to work. After commuting for the last couple of weeks, I have not been satisfied with my Look pedals for getting clipped back in quickly before getting run down at a busy intersection. I know Speedplay's are dual sided, so entry/exit should be easier. I'm looking for feedback on the pros and cons of Speedplay vs. Look or other options for road pedals.

Patrick, I have been riding Speedplay since they came out and they are great. Both the road and mountain pedals are flawless in my opinion. I spent a lot of time commuting using the mountain pedals so I had the low profile cleat I could walk in. They have no learning curve for getting in and out, they're durable and simple to keep clean. I ride the road pedals also but wouldn't use them to commute. I have three novice riders using them this year on our ride across Iowa, myself makes four. Buy the Speedplay Mountain pedal and don't delay. I hope that helps. Mike

Thanks Mike, the mtb option makes sense. Especially with mtb shoes, should give good push-off for pedal engagement.

Echoing Mike's comments, I've been riding the Speedplays on my current road bike for over 4 years now.

Pros: Flawless getting in and out. Durable. Lightweight.
Cons: you need to grease them regularly and after any rain (at least on my earlier editions models - don't know if the latter ones have changed). Otherwise, as one of my friends found out, eventually you will strip the pedal right off the spindle. Not good when it happens mid-ride, but he put thousands of miles on with no maintenance before this happened.

Given the cons, if you are someone who doesn't like to mess with bike maintenance, you might want to consider something else. Otherwise, I give them a huge thumbs up - but agree with Mike again about using the Speedplay mtb pedals for commuting.

Thanks Kaiser, much to the wife's disapointment, I actually enjoy bike maintenance.
