Winning at Evanston Superweek!

No. Not me. I'm S-L-O-W. I took my kids to see the Evanston Criterium again this year, which is part of the ICC Superweek series. Something they offer every year are races on the course for kids aged 9 and under. It was actually my younger son's idea that he wanted to race it - he sort of insisted on it. So we signed him up and he lines up for the 1/2 mile 6 and 7 year old race with about 45 to 50 other kids. Here at the start are parents telling their little kids before the race about lines to… Continue

Bike Cleaning as Therapy

I'm not sure why, but once every few weeks, I like to give my bike more love and attention for a 90 minute period than I've given to my wife of the last 20 years. Rags, brushes, solvent, and lube are not only the tools of a sadistic sex addict, but also for those of us who, like me, love to maintain their rides. My current road bike is a number of years old and has over 11K miles on it. But it still looks pristine, the cassette is 'clean enough to eat off of' (as one jealous cohort put it), and… Continue

Fixed Gear Death Trap!

[Comment: this is a post on the SF Bay Area CraigsList - enjoy] Fixed Gear Death Trap Date: 2008-03-16, 6:33PM PDT I'm selling a complete fixed gear. It is totally ready to ride and will probably kill you. I pushed it into a bike shop recently to have the rear wheel trued. At the bottom of my receipt it read, 'My advice, get a new bike.' So, I am. And maybe you are too! He was reserved enough not to use the words 'death' or 'trap,' but I'm not! The frame is probably an old Raleigh… Continue

Warm Weather finally arriving in Chicagoland!

It's the end of May and my fingers were numb from the cold at the end of a ride yesterday. Warmth coming this weekend (finally - we've been below normal, it seems, since last October!) means we can take early morning or evening rides without our winter gear. Yippeeee!!!

Cycling - makes you fat?

OK, cycling itself doesn't make anyone fat. If more people cycled in the USA, my country would be a leaner, healthier, and happier place. But I'm working on an article about my experience this summer. Where I got faster and dropped 3.5 lbs of weight (losing 5.5 lbs of muscle and gaining 2 lbs of fat). By riding a lot. And not lifting like I normally do. Type II fiber dominant types need beware. More to come....

LOL!! I can only imagine what you thought you heard! I did stay up right which is difficult considering the extra weight I am carrying! Well, if I ever fall off my bike and into a river, at least I know that I will float. AHAHAHA And no, I am not a better rider than you or Dan. Dan is just too complimentary.

There does that make you two feel better?!?

Glad to hear from you, I'm glad you had fun when you were in Alaska. We do have a short season but i try to cycle year round. it is difficult, depending who the Mayor is, because a good Mayor will have the streets and sidewalks cleaned very quickly after it snows. We have some great events, including the FIREWEED400, a RAAM qualifier that starts at Sheep Mountain Lodge on the Glenn highway and goes to Valdez and back. Did it as a team last year and it was tough but awesome! I will do the 100 mile out and back this year.

I will be doing a lot of road riding to get ready for the Route 66 ride. Hope the weather is nice!

Hello Kaiser I thought you spelled your name with a Q? What do you think of this year's team riding jersey? I am having trouble finding one that fits.

I love riding the hills. A lot of these mountain passes are much more beautiful when taken in at 8mph vs 65mph in a car.

I hate flats, I'm bad at them :)
