If more people rode bikes instead of drove cars.

We wouldn't be in Iraq. People wouldn't be dying for our "strategic interests" (read: future oil supplies). And, perhaps, the oil companies would turn themselves into "energy" companies and with government encouragement accelerate the search for new technologies and new sources of energy to replace carbon-based energy to drive the future economy. Just a thought. Gerry

On Yer Bike.

I am a beginner. I ran for 30 years. I tried to run almost every day. If you try to run every day you may get 5 days a week. That keeps you in shape. I used to miss the endorphin wrap when I couldn't run. Getting hooked on endorphins is, beyond sex and a profound martini, one of the smartest things a body can do. Cycling is more hassle than running because your need clothes, helmet, etc. And while no one (in their right minds) is going to steal your running shoes if you stop for nature, you hav… Continue

The bike is more impressive than my riding. 10 or 12mph against the wind is still slow, but I am not bad at distance. Carbon is more and more "accessible" in the US. And as I told Theo, if you shop at the end of the season you can find "last year's" new bikes for $hundreds off. Obviously the design is the thing, not the just material. My sits a little more upright than traditional road bikes, for people of vintage. I don't believe my set-up is right---I've tried moving the seat, raising and lowering the front---so I thought I'd invest in a new fitting. I made the mistake of asking a guy who does a spinning class I go to sometimes. This guy is at the upper end of the physical condition and emotional obsession scale. He does 24 hours rides in Utah where people fall asleep on their bikes. (Must sign up.) He spent over $6000 his new bike and boringly raves about his great bike shop. So I wandered into the shop with my pathetic Trek carbon. I didn't know that you're supposed to make an appointment to be interviewed. It's just your average neighbourhbood bike shop, if your neighbourhood is Eaton Square or Avenue Montaigne. You sit on a low couch surrounded by wide-screen TVs playing videos of the Tour, sipping espresso and having your back-rubbed by massage therapists with PhDs, while the bike consultant asks you about your deep cycling desires. On the wall are hung exotic Italian bikes and frames. The macho trainer recommended this place for a refit. They want $300 to do it. I suddenly thought, what's a little circulation loss anyway?

Hi Gerry, Theo came home last night so chuffed to have spent lunch deep in cycling chat - I think it even overshadowed ripped clothing! Most impressed to hear you ride a carbon bike.
Nope, not much glamour in lycra...

Rick,
Eifferts and Dwars still here(!).
Florence lives in Montpelier and her husband is a video creator and web designer in Burlington. Smaller world.
Any thoughts on improving the Veloist to make more interesting and useful, one you'd want to visit regularly, much appreciated. Please pass on to your two-wheeled friends.

Gerry,
Glad to hear how well the girls are doing. Yes, it is wonderful that our children get older while we manage to stay the same age. Lauren just started working at FraftFCB. (She told me you were on this site.) Shie is living near our old neighborhood, at Lakeview anf Fullerton. Bobby is a freshman at UVM, having finished high school at a ski academy in Vermont. Johnny is a freshman at New Trier HS and skiing competitively. All-in-all everyone is doing well. Please say hello to Penelope.
All the best,
Rick

I just posted my first Public Service Video reminding riders to wear their helmet. Send it to everyone you know that rides and let’s be careful out there. Don’t forget to have them join The Veloist and share their rides, adventures and passion for cycling.

Ride safe. Mike the Veloist

Clearlty, it can happen to anybody, even a veteran London cyclist like you. Those track bikes look tempting and simple. I believe that's what my first bike was like when the Bronx was first settled.

Gerry, Cheers for the invite, will have a proper look over the next few days.
Sounds like you came a cropper on clipless. I tried a frinds fixed wheel single speed the other day and having decided I knew what was going on casually pulled to a stop before casually falling flat on my arse. not quite sure I am ready to be glued to my bike yet.
Tom.
